I think most of us know that smell is one of the strongest ways to remember something. When I smell a pot roast cooking it reminds me of Sunday afternoons when a roast had been cooking all night in the crock pot. When I smell wet grass mixed with fertilizer it reminds me of high school football and cheering at good ol' Northcutt Stadium on a Friday night. When I smell leaves burning it reminds me of fall. When I smell asphalt it reminds me of hot days walking around at Six Flags. When I smell chimnies burning it reminds me of Christmas. I have many memories of living in the States, seasons changing, etc. I also have memories of what each season brings, or brought as I was a child.
It leads me to wonder, what are the memories that my children will have from being mostly-raised in Mexico? For instance, there is this awful, horrible, you-can't-even-imagine smell over by the airport here in Guad. I lived in the States for 29 years and there is no smell in the States to match it. My kids know that when they smell that smell that we are close to the airport, or atleast they think they are; that smell isn't just exclusive to the airport. That is just one example. I just wonder what memories they will share with me as adults that they developed growing up in another country.
